Arrange Multiple Photos into Clean Grid, Row, or Column Collages
Combining several pictures into a single frame should not require creating an account on a bloated design platform or fighting with rigid templates that chop off people's heads. Whether you are assembling a side-by-side "before and after" comparison, grouping product angles for an e-commerce listing, or building a multi-photo moodboard, our browser-based Photo Collage Maker arranges your images on an HTML5 Canvas locally on your device.
Every cell in the grid automatically scales between 200 px and 600 px (targeting a crisp 1600 px master canvas) and centers each photo proportionally inside its slot. That means wide landscape shots and tall mobile portraits can sit together in the same collage without destructive edge cropping, unified by your chosen background color and border spacing.
Exploring the Four Collage Layout Modes
Inside the Layout panel in the sidebar, you can switch between four structural arrangements at any time with a single click:
- Auto Grid (Smart Balanced Matrix): Automatically calculates the cleanest column-and-row balance based on how many files you load—placing 2 or 3 images in a single row, 4 images in a
2×2 square, 5 to 6 images in a 3×2 grid, up to 9 images in a 3×3 matrix, and up to 16 images in a 4×4 board.
- Horizontal Row (Side-by-Side Strip): Aligns all uploaded pictures in a single left-to-right row (
N × 1), ideal for step-by-step sequences, panoramic storyboards, or three-step tutorials.
- Vertical Stack (Top-to-Bottom Column): Stacks every photo vertically in a single column (
1 × N), useful for long-form blog graphics, Pinterest pins, or mobile chat comparisons.
- 2-Column Grid (Paired Rows): Forces a two-column structure regardless of how many photos you add, stacking pairs of images neatly down the page for A/B product comparisons or dual-column catalogs.
How to Build and Customize Your Photo Collage
- Select your starting photos: Click Upload images (multiple) or drag and drop two or more
JPG, PNG, or WebP files directly onto the page.
- Pick a layout structure: Click any of the four icons under Layout to see your photos snap into an automatic grid, horizontal row, vertical stack, or two-column arrangement on the live canvas.
- Reorder or add photos on the fly: In the Images (drag ⋮⋮ to reorder) panel, grab the
⋮⋮ handle next to any thumbnail and drag it up or down to swap its position in the collage. Click Add more images to append additional files, or click ✕ to remove an unwanted shot.
- Dial in inner spacing and outer borders: Open Gap & background to adjust the inner gutter between photos from
0 px (seamless edge-to-edge) up to 40 px (default 8 px), and slide Padding from 0 px to 80 px to frame the outer perimeter of the canvas.
- Choose a custom background fill: Pick a shade using the Background color picker, enter a 6-digit hex code (default
#FFFFFF), or click one of the six quick swatches (white, black, soft gray, ice blue, warm cream, or mint green).
- Export your finished PNG: Check the live Images count and output Dimensions in the summary bar, then click Download collage to save a lossless PNG file to your device.
Ways to Polish Your Collage Before and After Export
Depending on where you plan to publish or print your combined image, you can pair this collage builder with other tools on Images Mint:
- Pre-crop photos to matching 1:1 squares: Because our collage engine preserves each photo's full aspect ratio inside square cells, combining a tall portrait with a wide landscape will show background bars around the narrower sides. If you want every photo to fill its square cell edge-to-edge without letterbox bars, crop your individual shots to a
1:1 ratio first using our Image Cropper.
- Add titles, prices, or "Before / After" labels: Once you download your collage, open it in our Add Text to Image tool to place headings or captions across the frame.
- Protect your moodboard or product grid: Photographers and store owners can stamp a logo across the finished composition using our Image Watermark tool.
- Resize or compress the exported PNG: Since the collage downloads as an uncompressed, lossless
.png file to keep borders razor-sharp, you can shrink its file size by up to 70% for faster web loading with our PNG Compressor, scale it to exact pixel dimensions with the Image Resizer, or bundle multiple collage boards into a document using the Image to PDF converter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are my photos uploaded to a remote server when I make a collage?
No. Every image you select is decoded and drawn onto an HTML5 2D Canvas directly inside your web browser. Your personal family photos, product shoots, and screenshots never leave your computer or phone.
Why do some of my photos have colored bars above or beside them inside the grid?
Instead of automatically chopping off the top, bottom, or sides of rectangular photos to force them into squares, our renderer scales each image proportionally so 100% of the original picture remains visible. The space around non-square images is filled with your selected Background color. To eliminate those bars completely, either upload square images or match the background color to your page theme.
How many images can I combine into a single collage?
There is no hard lock on image count. The Auto layout has dedicated presets for up to 16 photos (4×4) and dynamically expands the grid using a square-root matrix for 17 or more images, clamping each cell to a minimum of 200 × 200 px so every picture stays clear.
Why does the collage download as a PNG instead of a JPG?
Exporting as PNG prevents the fuzzy compression halos that JPEG encoding often creates along straight grid borders, solid background colors, and sharp photo edges.
