Extract Precise HEX, RGB, and HSL Color Codes from Any Image Instantly
Whether you are matching a brand color palette from a client's moodboard, pulling an accent shade from a photograph for your web design, or extracting color codes for digital illustration, guessing exact hues by eye is nearly impossible. Our browser-based Image Color Picker lets you upload any image and click directly on individual pixels to reveal their exact digital color definitions in real time.
Powered by local HTML5 Canvas pixel inspection, your files are processed entirely within your device's memory. There are no server uploads, meaning your private design assets and client proofs remain 100% confidential while you sample colors.
Understanding Color Formats: HEX, RGB, and HSL
Every time you click a pixel on your image canvas, the tool instantly generates three standard digital color formats in the sidebar:
- HEX Code (Hexadecimal): The universal 6-character code preceded by a hash symbol (e.g.,
#2451FF) used extensively in CSS stylesheets, HTML design, and web development.
- RGB Value (Red, Green, Blue): Expresses colors on a scale from 0 to 255 (e.g.,
36, 81, 255), ideal for digital screens, software graphics editors, and UI design applications.
- HSL Value (Hue, Saturation, Lightness): Represents color through cylindrical coordinates (e.g.,
227°, 100%, 57%), making it intuitive for designers adjusting color shades, tints, and tones.
How to Use the Image Color Picker
- Upload your image: Click Upload an image or drag and drop any
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or SVG file into the browser window.
- Click or tap to sample pixels: Move your cursor across the live image preview. A crosshair cursor will appear, and clicking or tapping any spot instantly places a white-bordered marker dot over the exact sampled pixel.
- Copy your color values: View the sampled color in the large visual swatch and click the Copy button next to the HEX, RGB, or HSL code to send it straight to your system clipboard.
- Access your recent color history: Every unique shade you pick is automatically stored in the Recent colors palette in the sidebar. You can click any recent swatch at any time to re-select it.
- Check file properties: Open the File info accordion to inspect the image's original filename, pixel dimensions, file size, and format.
Pair Your Color Palette with Other Design Tools
Once you extract your color codes, you can apply them across your web and media projects using our other browser utilities:
- Create matching brand graphics: Use your newly sampled HEX codes as background fills in our Image Collage Maker or when building social media banners.
- Overlay contrasting text: If you sampled a dark background shade, pick a contrasting white or accent HEX code and add typography to your photos using the Add Text to Image tool.
- Crop or resize image assets: Trim unwanted borders around your color reference images with the Image Cropper or scale them down with the Image Resizer.
- Optimize graphics for web delivery: Compress your UI assets and design mockups for fast page loading using our PNG Compressor or JPG Compressor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are my reference images uploaded to a server?
No. All color sampling and pixel inspection occur locally inside your browser using the HTML5 2D Canvas getImageData API. Your private images never leave your computer or phone.
Can I pick colors from transparent PNG or WebP images?
Yes. If you click on a transparent area of a PNG or WebP file, the canvas background checkerboard will show through, and the tool will sample the transparent channel or background color accurately.
How many recent colors can the sidebar remember?
The Recent colors palette automatically stores up to your last 8 unique color selections in a convenient row. Clicking any swatch instantly reloads its HEX, RGB, and HSL values.
Why won't the copy button work on some older mobile browsers?
The tool uses the modern Clipboard API with a robust fallback mechanism (using temporary textarea elements and document.execCommand) to ensure color codes can be copied successfully across almost all desktop and mobile devices.
